Re: MalpracticeFrom: Dr. Ainsworth (ainsron@sbcglobal.net)Fri Sep 26 16:47:55 2003
This was posted on the ACOG website today: Farmers Insurance Stops Writing Medical Liability Insurance Farmers Insurance Group has announced that it will stop selling medical malpractice insurance, reports the Associated Press. This will undoubtedly put additional strain on physicians in the 18 states that Farmers currently serves. Farmers has "suffered significant underwriting losses" recently and plans to refocus on its core lines of home, business, auto, and life insurance, said a company spokesperson. The company will stop renewing existing policies on January 1, and annual medical liability policies will expire over the next 15 months. The insurance group has active malpractice policies valued at $94.5 million, with roughly one-third of its premiums in California but with its largest market share of almost 24 percent in Hawaii. Executives have been meeting with state insurance regulators to discuss their reasons for pulling out of the medical malpractice sector. States in which Farmers Insurance Group was writing medical liability insurance include: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Montana, North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
