Re: Significant Others/Kids in exam roomFrom: Braun, R. Daniel (rbraun@iupui.edu)Wed Aug 13 08:18:26 2003
In my situation, a county hospital, most of our patients have no resources for child care and have to bring the kids along. I have enough trouble getting a chaperone in the the room, that there is no way to find someone to take care of the kids outside. Tired of the Moms who bring the little ones and don't try to keep them from going to the southern end of the room. If the Mom has to bring the 3 year old, at least have enough sense to have them hold your hand by your side, or something like that. I really can skip the screaming 15 month olds in for the pap one year later, and my staff usually hears it and comes and gets the baby for the 3 minutes it takes. Garry In my previous practice, we posted a sign that said something like this in the reception area (Please note it is politically incorrect to say "wating room"): "Kids? We love 'em - in fact we've delivered a whole bunch of 'em. Federal law ( I would always misquote OSHA) would like to protect them from some potentially harmful substances/chemicals ( KOH, Monsell's, silver nitrate, Lugol's iodine...etc)that we keep in the examining rooms. For their safety we suggest you bring a companion to keep them company in the reception area or arrange for child care during your appointment." It kept the screaming 15 month olds to a minimum - only the hardcore earth-moms with the kids dangling from their breasts would ignore the sign. ;+) Robert Modugno MD MBA FACOG Marietta, GA http://www.novaobgyn.yourmd.com

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
