Re: alternatives to medical practiceFrom: Gail Waldby (gwaldby@willinet.net)Tue Aug 5 13:36:45 2003
Richard, excellent question. I think the AMA still has a booklet on options, but I don't think it is very helpful. Some possibilities are: 1) mystery writer 2) novel writer 3) non-fiction writer (topics??) 4) expert witness which could become less feasible if the malpractice crisis is solved and which is also less feasible if you aren't practicing medicine 5) come to South Dakota with some of the lowest malpractice premiums in the nation 6) work for the Public health service or Indian health service or a very large VA with a large number of female veterans 7) volunteer services in India or Alaska or Bangaladesh or Nepal--I have contacts in India if anyone is genuinely interested in this 8) whatever else interests you but usually the cost of re-education makes anything but medicine not feasible 9) coach other physicians considering alternatives to medicine 10) do whatever it takes to get your spouse gainfully employed at a salary you can live on 11) downsize your life style drastically so you can live on 3.5-4.0% per year of a 50% stocks/50% bonds portfolio 12) retrain in a medical field such as ultrasound technician which pays fairly well if you do locums--radiation therapy tech used to pay well also Just brainstorming. Whenever I think this completely through, I never find anything but medicine and my current specialty feasible. Gail Waldby, MD rural SD Richard Chudacoff, MD wrote:

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
