wow. i dont know about where you practice, but at our hospital the patients subjective complaint of pain is now "the fifth vital sign". we get dinged by the QA police is we dont document it in each days progress note. over 90% of our labor patients have an epidural; usually the only patients not getting one have shown up in advanced labor and ready to push.

i agree that labor pain is a "natural" event but then again so is a kidney stone and i have never heard a urologist tell his male patient "just breathe through it". but seriously, i see no benefit in withholding the most effective pain control at one's disposal.
