Private Umbilibal Cord Blood CollectionFrom: Diana Saari MD (guto0002@tc.umn.edu)Sun May 25 20:49:08 2003
A warning about California Cryobank's collection equipment. I was asked by a repeat C/S patient - whom I had just met as a FP consult - to do collection with the kit. I've done this for other patients and have not had trouble, but not through this particular company. I could not get the needle cover off the collection tubing. It was not at all like a normal needle cover - more like a ribbed rubber material that you might find around electric wiring. I finally yanked it off with a Kelly, in the process driving the end beneath the nail bed of my left hand. I collected with the needle anyway - it's not an interchangable system, and told the couple it might not be suitable for storage since the babie's blood was contaminated with my own. I called the company later in the day to ask if the stem cells could still be recovered - the guy at the other end, after several transfers, having no idea, said he would ask the medical director. No word for over a month. I wrote to the company to say that I would refuse any other patient's request to collect with their equipment unless the needlecover was re-designed. No response. I did advise the couple NOT to pay fees if the blood was deemed un-storable.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
