Re: Family Practice Consultation Guidelines

At our small hospital, the issue of FPs doing Ob has resurfaced. There has not been an FP doing Ob here in over 14 years, but there may be one coming. Our chair has proposed that we amend the FP's delineation of privileges such that they have prearragned for Ob backup (as opposed to the Ob on call) or they can't do any Ob.

I suggested that a conversation needed to take place between the two chairmen BEFORE the OB department changed the FP privileges. I think the two departments will agree on this issue, but perhaps not how it is being handled.

I felt that we did not have the domain to change another department's privileges--PERIOD--just as they can't alter ours. Granted, due to unique nature of the potential relationship, we must have input. . .

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
