Yeah, John, I was looking through the PDR about the drugs she had received prior to this episode - macrobid, indocin and steroids - when I came across the bit about acute and chronic lung reactions - I actually was aware about nitrofurantoin and pulmonary fibrosis - I always thought this was associated with older patients and chronic use. It's strange that if this was an acute reaction that she has not responded to steroids - the pulmonologist is aware of this and thinks it may be a long shot - but heck - this whole case is very bizarre. She has made the pulmonary pathologist at Mayo aware of the history of macrobid use. We are waiting to hear what his take on this is after he reviews the lung biopsy slides.

Macrobid is used very frequently during pregnancy - probably is the preferred drug for cystitis.

Thanks for your thoughts.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
