I see one about every 5 years or so. I have manipulated most of them in order to get resolution. I have never had to take anyone to OR although several of them wished that they had had an anesthetic. Once you drain the bladder, most will respond to gentle pressure upward behind the cervix. If not then application of a tenaculum with gentle downward traction on the tenaculum has always worked for me.

I have just reread William Hunter's vivid description of an incarcerated gravid uterus. Hunter was not the first person to recognise this condition but perhaps the first to describe it in detail. It seems to have been more common in his day than it is now. Looking back, I can only remember encountering it two or three times and on each occasion it responded to conservative treatment. Has anyone a different experience or had to treat it by manipulation or laparotomy?

PS Hunter had his portrait painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds with the postmortem specimen of the case he described lying on the table in front of him. No political correctness then. Brian Hackman

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
