2) Pennsylvania physicians call on Commonwealth to address state liability crisis A gathering of 250 physician leaders at the annual House of Delegates meeting of the Pennsylvania Medical Society (PaMS) held this past weekend declared the state's medical liability insurance crisis a "code blue" emergency and called on elected officials to bring under control the skyrocketing costs of liability insurance before patient care further deteriorates.

"Escalating insurance rates, including the surcharge from the state-run MCARE Fund, combined with state law requiring doctors to carry insurance, could snap the thin thread from which health care is hanging," said Edward H. Dench Jr., MD, PaMS president. The statewide governing body of physicians also called on all health insurers to improve reimbursement levels so that Pennsylvania is minimally comparable to the national median. In addition, if the state fails to bring liability insurance costs to an affordable level, members of the House of Delegates discussed the possibility of physicians across the state needing to change their medical license status to "inactive" to avoid breaking the law if they are unable to pay the high premium rates. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
