I had the good fortune to have a prepared Wyeth rep in the office yesterday (ironically doing heel osteoporosis screening for us). They have a nice fact sheet with the Relative Risks developed from the study. Colon cancer and fracture risk are decreased significantly and breast cancer increased (but we KNEW that!). The disappointment to me is that this study (large and prolonged) is supporting the increase risk of MI and stroke, which may swamp any benefit, even with the lack of increased mortality from breast cancer.

Furthermore, I hate to feel like I have to give credit for doing the right thing (but so many times pharmaceutical companies have not). Wyeth does deserve some credit, they: 1)DID THE STUDY, and 2)did not try to squelch the results. It is the press that has sensationalized this, data is just data and now we know more than we did last month. (Or at least I will when the JAMA gets to the mailbox) It will be interesting to see how the estrogen only arm turns out.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
