As a part of the "under 25" generation, and a unwillingly coerced shaver, I perhaps can help on this subject. And I appologize for the longwinded semi-rant ahead of time.

First off, the whole issue to me starts with just what was being mentioned. Porn and other stars shaving (or other such hair removal) done to the entierty of their bodies. Legs, buttocks, genitals, etc. Mainstream catches hold, gossip takes it's toll. From there, having hair is considered gross and unsexy, female AND male. Partners believe, or are being told that body hair makes them dirty, and modern culture is obsessed with staying clean.

I'm 21, not that far out of high school, and still run into situations that demonstrate what I'm talking about. I remember hearing gossip on the bus. "That new girl, she raised her arm and OHMYGOSH!!!! It was like, gross! She had armpit hair!!" Ohh, such a sin, I thought. But I garuntee, that gossip spread and the girl was chastized for having hair there. And had I been an impressionable freshman, I'd have been set to shaving armpits for life because of that.

And once I overheard a few male friends joking. "I'd NEVER date a girl that didn't shave! Eww!" I got pretty irate about that statement. They later tried to console me that they were just joking. Even so, if I'd been a young teenage girl with a crush on one of them, I'd have immediately picked up shaving it all if I hadn't already.

Lastly, if you're still reading, I recall about a year ago, I dared to stick my nose into mainstream preppyness (ya know, those who actually care more about what others think of them than they care about themselves, Popular culture). I had my reasons for that, but that episode ended when a rather snooty 17 year old got mad at me and _tried_ to insult me over the phone. The best insult she could come up with was that I was dirty and never took showers. Heh... in my few days stay there, I watched all 6 people, wether they lived there or not, take showers an average three times a day. Because I didn't ever take a shower there, I guess she assumed that I was dirty and didn't take showers at all, or something like that. Goes to show how obsessed popular culture is with staying clean.

Hair is dirty and gross. It must go. It looks like dirt and holds dirt to the body. That's the thought. I despise this obsession. Shaving anything to me is a waste of time and causes health issues to the likes of which I'd rather not have... absesses, knicks, etc... I've argued this case on too many occasions. Still, I get the response that shaving solves more hygene issues than it causes. I try to tell them about razor burn, ingrown hair, absesses, sores, and they just say, "Well, if you do it right, that doesn't happen"

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
