Prematurity

Our Nursery is a level three dealing with the most critical premature infants. 23 to 24 week micro- preemies weighing under 600 grams are becoming the norm to us.

As you know the outcome of many of these infants is grim often resulting in major long term disabilities. The point: We are finding that most of the parents are unaware of teh risks involved in having an extreme premature infant. Therefore it is impossible for them to make an informed decision. They are usually approached when they are already in the process of delivery and are in no condition to evaluate.

OB.GYN would be the perfect place for the early education process to begin with the parents. Is this being a focus of your parctices or is in being left the the pernatologist to address at the time of delivery.

Your comments are appreciated.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
