Jim Ryan has raised big money since Jan. 1

By DOUG FINKE STATE CAPITOL BUREAU

Attorney General Jim Ryan has raised more than $1 million in campaign contributions since Jan. 1, including a huge donation from the Illinois Hospital Association.

In campaign disclosure reports filed Tuesday, Ryan, who is running for governor in the Republican primary, reported receiving a $150,000 donation from the Illinois Hospital Association on Feb 8. That one contribution accounts for about 13 percent of the money he raised since the first of the year.

"That’s an extremely large contribution, even given the openness of the Illinois system," said Kent Redfield, a political science professor at the University of Illinois Springfield and a spokesman for the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform. "When you make a $150,000 contribution, you really have people’s attention."

The IHA did not return a phone call seeking comment. Ryan’s campaign said the large contribution won’t win the association special favors.

"What is going to happen is Jim Ryan is going to listen to them," said spokesman Dan Curry. "He is committed to improving health care. They feel they have a potential governor who understands health care and is committed to improving it."

Hospitals watched as Gov. George Ryan cut their Medicaid reimbursements to help ease the state’s financial crisis. In an endorsement interview with the IHA, Jim Ryan outlined his plan for restoring the state to financial health, Curry said.

"They want predictability," Curry said. "Jim Ryan happens to have the same goal that they do."

The IHA announced Tuesday it is endorsing Ryan in the Republican primary. The IHA also endorsed Paul Vallas in the Democratic primary, though it donated only $50,000 to Vallas in February.

Lump-sum contributions of $100,000 or more to a candidate are rare in Illinois. Last fall, Jim Ryan received $100,000 from Indeck Energy Services, which builds and operates independent power plants. Indeck owner Gerald Forsythe and Ryan have known each other for years, Curry said.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Roland Burris received $200,000 from Jovan Broadcasting Corp., which owns WJYS-TV in the Chicago area. Also last fall, conservative businessman Jack Roeser contributed $270,0000 to another Republican governor candidate, state Sen. Patrick O’Malley of Palos Park. Roeser made one donation of $200,000 alone.

On Tuesday, O’Malley reported raising $611,000 since Jan. 1. More than $350,000 of that came from loans from his brother and sister.

The third GOP candidate, Lt. Gov. Corinne Wood, is again tapping her family’s fortune to help finance her campaign. Since Jan. 1, Wood’s husband, Paul, has loaned the campaign at least $1.1 million. Last fall, Paul Wood loaned $1.2 million to his wife’s campaign.

Contribution amounts for Wood are incomplete. As of press time, Wood’s campaign had not filed all of the required campaign disclosure reports.
