Droperidol

Our hospital pharmacist recently pointed out to us that the FDA had added restrictions to the use of Droperidol because of deaths due to prolonged QT interval. Use is restricted to having an EKG before using, telemetery for 2-3 hours after each dose. He feels that it should only be a 3rd or 4th line agent now. Have any others been getting the same advice? I have to admit, it has been my favorite agent for postop nausea for a number of years and I hate to change, but will probably go to phenergan or reglan now. Vistaril can't be given IV, Zofran is too expensive for routine use, Compazine is basically not available IV due to a national shortage. See <http://www.fda.gov/medwatch/safety/2001/inapsine.htm>

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
