Re: ADMINISTRATION PROMOTING ABSTINENCEFrom: Joanne Bulley, MD (jbulley@cheshire.net)Mon Jul 30 21:08:55 2001
Is this comparable to Bush promoting ethanol abstinence - and having his daughter arrested for false ID and underage drinking? I DO promote abstinence - from several angles - but there must be access without barriers for those having sex. They should not be left with the victorian option of - you had sex, now have the baby - preferably by disappearing at some unwed mothers home and pretending it never happened! Or you had sex - now live with the consequences of GC, Chlamydia, HPV, Syphyllis or HIV. I approach sexuality with all my patients - from teens to great great grandmas - as a gift that comes with our gift of life. For the devoutly religious this comes from God - for the atheist, it just exists. I emhasize that as a gift we are given we must treat it with utmost respect and cherish it, not abuse it. Therefore - acknowledge that it exists - acknowledge that it is something that can "carry you away" - so be aware & have plans and contingencies so it doesn't catch you off guard. For those that feel very guilty for having had pre-marital sex due to their religious upbringing - and don't use any contraception because they feel too guitly to acknowledge it - I emphasize that their God does not expect perfection - that only God is "perfect". The various permutations of these concepts have worked very well with folks of all ages. Joanne

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
