>From the NIH Working Group Report on High Blood Pressure in pregnancy:

"Gestational high blood pressure elevation is defined as a blood pressure greater than 140 mmHg systolic or 90 mmHg diastolic in a woman normotensive before 20 weeks. In the absence of proteinuria the disease (i.e. pre-eclampsia-eclampsia) is highly suspect when increased blood pressure appears accompanied by the symptoms of headache, blurred vision, and abdominal pain, or with abnormal laboratory tests, specifically low platelet counts and abnormal liver enzymes".

The poster subsequent to this one wondered if, in retrospect, this woman really had pre-eclampsia or something else (especially w/ respect to the stable platelet levels). However, the problem is that, in retrospect perhaps Garry could have waited, but would it have been prudent to have waited to see if she got *sicker* before making a judgement call, or to proceed and have a baby? There's the rub, eh? (Hindsight always being 20-20)

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
