Old-timer (was - RE: Savonarola)From: Griffiths Malcolm (Malcolm.Griffiths@ldh-tr.anglox.nhs.uk)Wed Mar 28 09:29:17 2001
I have now been inundated with replies (well two actually). I have to admit a degree of embarrassment - I think now looking back that I was the "old-timer" who asked the question last time too! Now I know I'm incapable of absorbing any more information! This "old-timer" thing wranckles a bit. Not that long ago I was the youngest of six consultants in our unit. Last year I was on the committee that appointed a new colleague. Late last year I became clinical director. Yesterday I appointed a further new colleague. I think I am an "old-timer". I still have 18 years to retirement though! -----Original Message----- From: Jeffrey W. Any of the old-timers remember why this came up beofre/Savonarola was a cleric/priest who rose to power in a renaissance era Italian city-state (Florence) and lead the burning of "religiously objectionable" materials- i.e., the Bonfires of the Vanities! Acquired from the MSN's Encarta Savonarola, Girolamo (1452-98), Italian preacher and reformer, whose zealous attempt to uproot corruption ended in martyrdom. Savonarola was born on September 21, 1452, of a noble family in Ferrara. In 1474 he joined the Dominicans in Bologna. He made his first appearance as a preacher in 1482 in the priory of San Marco, the Dominican house in Florence. His preaching centered increasingly on the sinfulness of the time, and he openly attacked the corrupt and aristocratic adherents of the Medici family. <snip> ..In 1498 he was declared guilty of heresy and seditious teaching and sentenced to death. The trial record was sent to Rome, where the sentence was confirmed. Savonarola, with two members of his order, was given up to the secular power. On May 23, 1498, after he had administered the last communion to his two companions and himself, the three were hanged and their bodies burned.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
