Mag sulfate is approved for use in breastfeeding mothers by the American Acadamy of Pediatricians. References a study by Cruikshank DP et al in Am J Ob Gyn 143:685-688 (1982) which basically proves that mag levels in breastfed babies of moms on mag not that much higher than mag levels of breastfed babies of moms not on mag. Keep in mind that mag is very poorly absorbed P.O. even if tons of it get into the milk, which it doesn't (Milk/Plasma ratio is 1.9/1). Moms on mag freely breastfeed in our hospital also and usually don't have any trouble holding onto the baby.

PS. Thomas Hale's book should be on the reference shelf in EVERY hospital nursery. I rely on it heavily.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
