Aredia

Question re: Aredia.

I've been on the OBGYN list for almost 3 years and spend most my time just reading and learning. I feel like I can almost guess what some people's responses to certain questions will be. Now I need your help. My mother, 77 years old, is being started on Aredia therapy (panmidronate disodium).

She had breast cancer and a mastectomy 8 years ago. She was on Tamoxifen for 5 years. There has been no recurrence of her breast cancer, to date. She had a bone density study 1 year ago. It was negative for any areas of osteoporosis or osteopenia. 1 month ago she slipped and fell in the rain. Landed on her back. Since then she has had severe back and abdominal pain. Her PCP, because of her history of breast cancer and her current problem of abdominal pain and bloating, did a CA 125 (11) and a pelvic CT scan (negative). She has been tried on numerous medications for pain relief. None have helped. Today she saw another MD and was given her first Aredia treatment.

Are any of you familiar with this? Have you had patients treated with it before? What is your experience with it? I will admit that I am just starting a journal and literature search on it tonight as I have not heard of it before.

Thanks for your input.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
