Re: Liability for homebirth

Any relationship with a patient planning home birth places the physician at increased liability if a problem occurs. It places a stamp of approval on her choice for home birth, no matter how much you document in the chart that you disapprove. My malpractice carrier, and probably your employer's malpractice carrier will not cover for any suits arising out of a planned home birth for whom prenatal is provided in the office. Of course I still see them when they present to the OB unit with problems, and I will care for them there if I am on call.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
