I don't have a CPT book handy, but what my staff would call a "consult"--like a woman coming in to talk about menopause, or infertility--isn't a consult in the CPT sense. I believe it is an E/M visit billed by time, since the physical exam component is not done. Why would this occur? How about the woman who comes in for an annual, and by the way, I've not gotten pregnant for two years. It is perfectly reasonable for her to come back at another time to discuss this, and for you to bill for the service rendered (I'm ignoring whether infertility is covered by her carrier in this example). If others have a different take, or if I'm wrong, please say so. Garry

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
