Perhaps some commentary? <<Yesterday I described the nature of campus rape as found in a recent Justice Department study and reviewed the research indicating that resistance with a firearm is a woman's best chance of escaping an attempted rape. This raises some obvious pragmatic problems, however. First is the matter of training. The gun by itself is useless; to be effective, it must be wielded by one who knows well how to operate it. Training is essential, as is frequent practice at the range. >> Yes, guns don't kill people. It's those damned bullets!!! But seriously, folks, instead of pulling a gun, how about a double finger eye gouge, low front snap kick to the groin, and then low side kick to the side of the knee to drop the guy... (All easy to do even in high heels and a tight skirt) How easy is that? Ask any woman who takes REAL karate classes... It's a piece of cake. <<More importantly, she must have made, long in advance, a deliberate decision that if it ever becomes necessary to protect herself against a rape or other violent assault, she will brandish and, if warranted, fire it.>> And she also has to worry about whether it's legal to carry the gun, own the gun, and whether SHE'LL be thrown in jail (or gaol) for inappropriate use of deadly force. However, the above attack, even if it leaves the attacker blind and crippled, will NOT be seen by a district attorney as "deadly force".
<<Most crime perpetrators can easily distinguish between a bluff and a
serious threat. One might attempt to use a toy or an unloaded gun or brandish
a real gun without having formed the intent to discharge it if needed.
Although these stratagems might work occasionally, they cannot be relied on.
>> Most crime perpetrators can distiguish between someone sauntering along with an air of confidence and self-reliance, with an obviously physically fit gait... and they let them pass, waiting for the slow, timid soul who looks helpless. Remember the law of the jungle: The old, the weak and the infirm. If you have the LOOK of a fit, trim, confident, ABLE individual, you throw the potential attacker into a quandry and he'll likely let you pass. Joe P. Just a couple of pence there... Not that I have anything against gun ownership. I just got my son a Walther PPK-S for a wedding present last summer... My other kid just got a Beretta .32. My GIRLS want guns, too... One of them is going out with a law student and they went a couple of weekends ago and fired an AK-47, M-16, and Uzi. Of course, we live "down South"... and yes, we have at least one pick-up truck in the family.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
