Unless the runaway engine of the tort establishment is not derailed we won't have to worry about health benfits or insurance because more folks will be uninsured.

Greater liability would force employers to exit health benefits business

Last Updated: 2001-02-12 14:17:25 EST (Reuters Health)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Nearly half of major employers would likely get out of the business of providing healthcare coverage if federal law were amended to increase health plan sponsors' liability, a new survey finds.

The percentage of major organizations saying they would drop healthcare coverage if they became liable rose 10 percentage points this year to 46%.

Greater liability also would negatively affect employer and consumer costs, according to 81% and 80% of survey respondents, respectively.

Hewitt Associates, a Lincolnshire, Illinois-based management consulting firm, polled more than 600 US companies on a range of healthcare issues, including pending legislation and increased interest in "consumer-driven" healthcare models.

"Employers are worried that they could potentially become the target of employee lawsuits," Jack Bruner, leader of Hewitt's health management practice, said in a statement.

"This is causing employers to not only examine their current healthcare strategy, but evaluate new solutions and alternatives to delivering healthcare," he said.
