Re: self referral was intragroup switching

It would be cost effective care if they always used good judgement. One recent patient comes to mind who had a palpable mass and I was planning to refer to a general surgeon after the mammogram and sonogram. The radiologist took it upon himself to do a core biopsy, which was nondiagnostic - and the patient subsequently had a open biopsy anyway. Extra cost, extra procedure for no benefit. I discussed this with the surgeon and he had seen this from the same group on several occaisions. I complained to the radiologist and haven't seen it again, but its only been a couple of months.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
