1. AMA tells Congress: Break the gridlock, pass patients' rights legislation now

The AMA this week announced its strong support for the compromise bipartisan

patients' rights legislation introduced in the U.S. Senate and House of

Representatives. Urging lawmakers to break through gridlock and pass the bills

swiftly, AMA Board Chair D. Ted Lewers, MD, said, "This is Congress' first big

chance on the health care front to prove that they can deliver what voters have

been telling them they want for years." The legislation is a modified version

of a bill that overwhelmingly passed the House in 1999 with 275 votes after an

intense campaign by the AMA. Read the full story at

2. AMA voices support for refundable tax credits to patients

Individual ownership of health insurance gives patients more control of their

health care decisions, AMA President Randolph D. Smoak Jr., MD, told the Los

Angeles Times in a recent letter. The letter was written in response to an

editorial about Families USA and Health Insurance Associations of America's

joint plan to cover the uninsured, which includes a focus on refundable tax

credits to employers. The AMA, on the other hand, calls for tax credits to

individuals. Support for refundable tax credits is just part of the AMA's plan

to increase the number of Americans with health insurance coverage. Read Dr.

Smoak's letter at http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/article/3289-3809.html

3. Online compliance tutorial addresses hospital-based physicians

The AMA members-only Compliance Interactive Tutorial System fraud and abuse

educational tool now is offering its sixth module, "Hospital-based Physicians."

The online module provides physicians with a basic understanding of two

compliance risk areas relating to hospital-based physicians: (1) proper billing

of services furnished to Medicare beneficiaries; and (2) anti-kickback concerns.

These two areas of risk may result in substantial penalties for both

hospital-based physicians and hospitals. Go to the tutorial at

4. National Donor Day coming up this Saturday

The AMA and 15 public health organizations are joining the Saturn Corporation to

raise awareness of

National Donor Day, which will be held this Saturday, Feb. 10. The event aims to

alleviate the nation's "desperate need for increased organ and tissue donation."

On Donor Day, Saturn's 437 retailers will be holding blood drives and adding

people to the list of organ and tissue donors. More than 25,000 units of blood

were collected in the three previous national donor days. Learn more at

5. Nominations sought for AMA-YPS Community Service Award

The AMA Young Physicians Section (AMA-YPS) invites you to submit nominations for

the 2001 AMA-YPS Community Service Award. The awards aim to recognize and

encourage excellence in community service activities carried out by young

physicians. The AMA-YPS Governing Council will select the award recipients based

on criteria including the physician's positive effect on a given community or

population. The AMA-YPS represents physicians under age 40 who are no longer

residents or fellows - or physicians of any age within their first five years of

professional practice. For more information, including nomination forms, go to

http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/2390.html Nominations are due May 1.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
