Re: Lunelle/contraception coverage

There was a time, long ago, in our great country, before oral contraceptives, before Medicare and Medicaid, when the only practical contraceptives were barrier methods. The number of unwanted pregnancies was not nearly as large as it is now, but then, at least out of wedlock pregnancies were looked upon as a disgrace.

Now we have oral contraceptives, IUDs, and diaphragms available on state, county and local levels for those who cannot afford them, and we have a significantly larger number of unplanned and out-of-wedlock pregnancies than in less sophisitcated times. It seems with little effort men and women can avail themselves of contraception if they are motivated to. They are not so motivated.

I am sure there are some patients who cannot afford contraception who are in a committed relationship and need assistance. Why the government has to mandate contraceptive coverage for the entire country is not clear to me.

If we, as a society, are truly concerned about decreasing the number of unwanted pregnancies (and that is the reason for the proposed legislation) more will be needed than just providing contraception. Am I wrong?

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
