Re: contraception coverage

I find it truly incredible that many Health Insurance Companies in the US will provide coverage for childbirth and other pregnancy related medical/surgical expenses but not contraception. Think about it... prenatal care with delivery plus the hospital expenses, (not to mention "disability") coverage by yet another insurer, CONSERVATIVELY runs US $5,000 to $6,000.

What are they thinking? For the same money to provide maternity benefits for one women, again CONSERVATIVELY, 40 women could get the OCP or Depo Provera or now, Lunelle for one year (assuming formulary agreements between insurers and drug companies)

I really don't have accurate figures here obviously, but I hope my point is well understood. Around my part of the country, Humana is a common insurer. For all of the bad stuff one might say about them, by my experience, they are very good about covering contraception.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
