Kevin:

Philosophy aside, I like and agree with your approach. It may sound arrogant and cruel and uncaring, but it is a real world solution. I don't see me spending countless amounts of my time (very valuable to me and my family) figuratively beating my head against the wall trying to convince someone to get blood, take antibiotics, etc. State the facts, have a two way conversation, and make a recommendation, and document it.

If they disagree, so be it. If I can't live with their decision, they can properly go elsewhere if it isn't an emergency that obligate me to care for them. It has been a while since I've had a JW patient (maybe that's why ;)), but when the issue came up, I told them outright that I would have a bit of trouble not using blood if deemed lifesaving, but never had to do it against anyone's wishes.

Kevin and I will don our flame retardant suits now.

Garry

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
