Pap smear timing

Ok, here's a question that comes up every year when I do my "Introduction to the Pap smear and Pelvic Exam" lecture to the students. In low-risk monogamous women who have never had an abnormal pap, the recommendations are for pap smears q 3 years, but do you follow those recommendations in women who are on OCP's or HRT, or do you make them have a pap smear anyway every year when they come in for their refill? I see no evidence that the hormones affect the risk for cervical CA, but everyone around here seems to do them every year on women who take hormones, whether they are low risk or not. Just curious what other folks do, and I'd be especially interested in how this works in countries outside the US.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
