Cultures are mutable, not fixed. How people interact with those they perceive as "other" is a part of every culture. It is how "other" is defined and how those interactions occur that mark the differences between cultures. Horrific atrocities against a wide variety of ethnic, religious, and political groups have occured in many parts of the world because of this. >> I agree in theory, but in practice it's a little different. We in the USofA, land of "W", measure history in terms of the Liberty Bell and the Declaration of Independence. So something that is a "cultural" phenomenon (like maybe it results from living in a big city ghetto) may indeed be amenable to change. After all, ghettos are not all that old (originating in the early 1900s, if I'm not mistaken). HOWEVER, the rest of the world has "cultural memories" that date back centuries, if not millenia. Just examples I've run across: A tour guide in Croatia once told us that it was accepted that the Jews killed JFK because they were still mad that the Catholics ran the Jews out of Spain. Have you ever heard of that?!? I hadn't... But it shows you how long the memories run. A MFM fellow of ours once told about how his family, desendants of Persian Christians, hence bloodline of the Crusaders, hated and were persecuted by Moslems in Palestine and whereever because of the Crusades. His grandfather was beaten to death in front of his family, etc, etc, by Moslems. As I recall, the Crusades were 800-900 years ago. Of course, most recently, the Watusi's and the Hutu's were killing each other because... because they're different tribes and that's what THEY do. Doesn't matter that they live in towns and cities and go to Christian churches. It's simply them against us. And of course, the name "Apache" is supposed to mean "Enemy" in Navajo or some other local Amerindian language, because the Apaches raided and killed anyone who wasn't with them... Way before the dreaded white man showed up in 1492 or so. So my point is, HOW does one UNDO the "ethnic memory" that may last 500-1,000 or more years??? It's VERY difficult. We in the US (at least those of us who "believe" in "America") just don't always understand the depth of some of these emotions (if "emotion" is the right word, even). Joe P.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
