I have been involved with civil rights struggles in this country since I was 14 years old. I don't see why an examination of the roots of a problem must be viewed as an excuse for it continuing. I do, however, believe that understanding why people act and believe the way they do may lead to more effective ways of influencing change in those people. I disagree about racism being a cultural problem. The belief systems of a group of people are part of their culture. Cultures are mutable, not fixed. How people interact with those they perceive as "other" is a part of every culture. It is how "other" is defined and how those interactions occur that mark the differences between cultures. Horrific atrocities against a wide variety of ethnic, religious, and political groups have occured in many parts of the world because of this. I certainly agree with you about the importance of political involvement. My political beliefs and activities have set me apart from much of mainstream U.S. culture for the past 35 years. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education.
