Re: Endometriosis--is it an autoimmune disease?From: Joanne Bulley (islesannie@yahoo.com)Wed Nov 29 21:52:27 2000
Paul - I agree we have no "hard" evidence - but it "makes sense" - that something with the immune system allows the metaplasia of normal peritoneum into endometrium. Persoanl Anecdote: I had my L/S TL in 1987 - no endometriosis and no problems conceiving in 1982 & 1984. Then at my hyst in September 1995 for disabling ovulatory RLQ pain and dysmenorrhea (usually took 2400mg ibuprofen in 3 doses over 2 hours to quiet the pain down enough to get out of a fetal position) I had endometriosis gluing the R ovary to the R fundus... I also was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis in the spring of 1996. Coincidental - or associated by autoimmune phenomena? If anyone has any ideas on studies to do to make a stab at correlation, I'd be delighted to donate my blood to the cause - and get my name on the report! :) Joanne

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
