I attended the Figo 2000 meeting in Washington DC. I knew Figo for more than 20 years, as an ultimate international authority in the field of obstetrics&gynecology since my years in the medical school, especially for their well-known staging and classification of genital tumours. I had not visited the USA before. I considered the FIGO 2000 meeting as a Capital Pilgrimage of all the gynecologists around the world. The experience was nice on the whole. I felt very happy and was honored to meet personally Dr. Kessel and Dr. Lippes. I admired the remarks of ex-Figo president Professor Seppela saying that they would urge the UN to take action against countries who fail to comply to measures to improve womens' health around the world. After that particular session I talked personally to Professor Seppela. I requested him that Figo should also urge the world to improve the working conditions of gynecologists since they constitute the major and ultimate part of the health team that sustain the women's health. Maybe he was in a hurry, maybe because I am not a native speaker of English so the way that I expressed myself was not eloquent enough, but probably because of his discourteous personality he told me angrily that "Figo is not a labor union. It is not a society for your making money. What you say is totally against the philosophy of Figo and what the Fatalla said." Then he fast walked out angrily not hearing the words that I stuttered. Then I went back near the stage near Fatalla talking with a group. I explained my self. I said that it is not a matter of money. I know that such as in the US the gynecologists are the physicians with the highest malpractice insurance premium rates. And he told me that of course it is good to improve the working conditions of gynecologists and he is not against it. When I came back to Turkey in addition to congress books and other printed material one of the souvenirs of FIGO 2000 congress was the Certificate of Attendance. I wanted to have it framed and hang on the wall of my private office near the other frames of certificates of many other congresses that I had attended. But there was something different, a defect which had not struck me in the colorful atmosphere of the US similar to what happened to me in Miami Florida. (See below). There was a red sully, a Lily banner, that if I had hung this certificate, would make me feel ashamed. Then I wrote an e-mail to the firm Events International that I was protesting the fact that I paid personally a total of US $1210 to attend to this congress and can not accept any banner on my certificate of attendance. They replied that they would reimburse. I replied that I did not requested any reimbursement a new Certificate without a Lily banner would do. They announced me that they shipped a certificate. I received it yesterday. But that BROWN & RED SULLY WAS STILL there. A firm may have contributed to a scientific activity in any amount. But this should never give them the insolence to have their name on the official documents of that meeting. I think I should have asked FIGO to preserve the dignity of the gynecologists before I had asked them to urge the countries to improve the working conditions of gynecologists.

P.S. My Miami affair: Because of flight conditions I stayed 2 nights at Miami and 3 nights in New York then I arrived to Washington DC and attended the meeting. While I was in Miami I saw a very bon marchée digital camera. So I bought a Minolta digital camera for about $200 from the firm Sound Sensations. It could carry 64 pictures and also had a mini color monitor on the back of it. I took some pictures in Miami and New York. At the 25 th picture the screen started to flash and went off. I changed the batteries but it did not help. The humidity in Manhattan when I stayed there was above 97%. I thought this was a very delicate far-eastern. In the bill of the Miamian firm it was written that they would change the goods in 14 days if brought in the original package. So when I was at 1201 K Street NW in Washington DC I phoned several times to Miami Fl. I sent the package via UPS back to Dade county. Yes they changed the good and sent me a brand new one in the original package via UPS when I was in Washington DC. But this new one even did not work once. I phoned the Miamian firm back and asked them why they did not check it before they send it ,they told me that they sent me in a hurry because I was to leave Washington soon, and to take it to Minolta office in New Jersey. I asked them should I go to a lawyer? They said that it would cost more. Me upset, met an old fellow gynecologist of mine who is working for an international aid agency in the US. She happened to have a very smart, efficient and clever secretary who would solve for example air line reservation problems with her cellular within seconds. She also had parents who lived in New Jersey. She promised to help me. She said she would either get the money or a working new machine. I told her not to bother her self. That this package was a waste that I would throw to the bin. Because when I see it again and again I would feel more and more upset. She told that she would fix it. But it has been two months since, even this dexterous lady who keeps telling people "never give up" does not seem to succeed. I thank my wife who stopped me while I was trying to buy a notebook PC for $500 to $1000 in Miami Florida. So I made a smaller mistake and I live with it. I hope that the Florida election resolves earlier. Happy weekend. Dr. Bulent Potur http://abone.rt.net.tr/emain.htm

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
