Re: OB: Varicella VaccinationFrom: Barbara Nicol MD (blnicol@ix.netcom.com)Sat Nov 4 11:50:11 2000
We have been screening like this for a year or more in our practice. It is very handy when a non-immune patient gets exposed; we already know that she needs VZIG (and she already knows that exposure is a Big Deal and calls right away). The postpartum vaccination is a bit more of a problem. The hospital doesn't want to carry it and so it doesn't happen automatically the way rubella vaccination does. We are also routinely asking our preconceptual patients this question. I understand that there is CDC support for this approach. Certainly, it makes sense to tackle varicella if we're going to screen and prevent rubella - have any of you seen a congenital rubella in the developed world recently? Yet one does see VZV in pregnancy. I want to add that I've greatly appreciated the misoprostol threads when I've had a chance to read the list.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
