I was taught that since HSV types I and II can be found either genitally or orally, and since close to 90% of the adult population is positive for oral HSV infection, that serum testing for antibodies is not particularly helpful in determining whether someone has genital HSV infection. This is the understanding of the physicians with whom I practice, as well.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
