I tried to post this response yesterday but it didn't post. I think Dr. Chudacoff must be right about the server problems.

Anyway, what I meant about the State of Illinois' stand on home birth is that I thought the powers that be would frown on a state EMPLOYEE doing home births (U of I is self-insured). Home birth is not illegal in Illinois. In fact, it is legal for anyone to attend any birth anywhere in the state, as long as they don't CHARGE for it. Otherwise I think home birth is limited to MD's, DO's, and CNM's working under the supervision of and MD or DO. Homefirst, by the way, is a group of mainly family practitioners. I'm not sure that any of them are OBGyn's. They have contacted me in the past about helping them expand out this way (I'm 70 miles from Chicago) but the folks in this area are too hostile to home birth, so it's not worth the hassle to me. I have in the past provided some backup to a couple of local midwives (back when I was taking my own OB call 24-7), but I found that a couple of their patients gave off very negative and suspicious vibes whenever they had to see me. They were very adamant about what they did and didn't want, but did not want to take responsibility for the outcome if things didn't go perfectly. When I stopped taking my own call I stopped doing midwife backup. I heard that one of the midwives I used to back up got arrested last month but I don't know the details. I actually considered having home births with my second and third kids and probably would have except that my first kid (the ten-lb baby--see earlier post under clanking forceps) pulled my uterus inside-out when he finally did come and I wasn't anxious for that to happen at home (I liked having an anesthesiologist right there when the OB went to shove my uterus back in) However, I do respect the right of low-risk women to have a home birth if they wish and I wish we were as accommodating in this country as they are in some other countries.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
