Not all home births were associated with unacceptable complications in the days before hospital births became the norm. The history of the Chicago Maternity Service makes fascinating reading. 14,500 births in the first 5 years (1932-1937--depths of the Depression). Two maternal deaths from hemorrhage, total maternal death rate <1/1000 (at a time when it was 6/1000 nationally). C-section rate <1%. High-risk moms delivered in tenement apartments by residents, med students, and student nurses, often with no prenatal care. Fascinating stuff. (a guy I know did his first delivery ever in the CMS--double footling breech twins to a 16-year-old primigravida, student nurse assisting, resident didn't make it to the birth. Mom and babies fine, my friend got a few early grey hairs and a great story to tell timid med students who are afraid of a normal vertex singleton delivery).

(and no I don't do home births. I'm employed by the State of Illinois and I suspect they would not be in favor of it)

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
