Dr. Michel Odent, author of Birth Reborn, has studied this phenomenon extensively. He calls it the Fetus Ejection Reflex. Triggered by fear, it's a necessary precursor to the "flight or fight" response. (If you have a baby inside you and are in the middle of labor, you have to get the baby out before you can "fight or flee"). My oldest child (ten pounds, 3-hour second stage) was a product of clanking forceps.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
