Re: Had a visit from my local Labcorp rep....From: ainsron@msn.comSat Sep 30 19:41:01 2000
I had the same discussion with the Unilab representative in my area, who does the Thin Prep for us. They base the recommendation on reflex HPV typing on the financial benefit of triaging out the ASCUS patients who have "High risk HPV" to move quickly to colposcopy, biopsy, LEEP, etc. vs. the ones who can simply be observed with repeat paps. The study they base it on is from a Kaiser hospital in California, and I haven't looked closely at it yet, its setting on my desk now. I can see how it might benefit a large group/HMO practice like Kaiser, but at this point it looks less useful to me. The one's I have received HPV typing on have almost all been a combination of high and low risk HPV, more confusing than helpful.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
