Re: JCAHO coming to the office? From: art fougner, md (evsono@pipeline.com)Sun Sep 24 08:18:59 2000
perhaps this is the source of the "rumor?" from the website - http://www.jcaho.org - (Oakbrook Terrace, Ill. - August 1, 2000) The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations today announced the development of a set of draft standards expressly for the accreditation of office-based surgery practices. The draft standards were developed in consultation with practitioners in the field, national health care organizations and industry experts. "Outpatient surgery in all forms has increased significantly and the number of surgeries performed in doctors' offices alone is expected to surpass those performed in hospitals by 2002," says Linda Kelley Peterson, executive director, Ambulatory Care Accreditation Program. "These standards were created specifically as a quality oversight tool for the smaller surgical practice." The office-based standards are patient-centered, focusing on six essential patient care areas: Quality of care, Patient safety, Improving care and improving health, Qualified and competent staff, Responsible leadership, and Customer Service Although the 2000-2001 Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Ambulatory Care (CAMAC) is applicable to small office-based surgery practices, feedback has indicated that the comprehensive nature of the manual can be overwhelming to small settings. In response, the Joint Commission reviewed the CAMAC and consulted with practitioners. Earlier this year, the Joint Commission's Ambulatory Care Users Group made recommendations on the draft standards and survey process for office-based surgery practices. Additional field review of the standards is underway and analysis of the responses is expected to be completed by the end of August. The Joint Commission's Standards and Survey Procedures Committee will review the standards for approval at its October 3 meeting. The standards are expected to go into effect November 1, 2000 and will be available in the Accreditation Manual for Office-Based Surgery Practices. Office-based surgery practices interested in becoming accredited by the Joint Commission can obtain an application by calling Mike Dye in the Accreditation Program Department at 630.792.5259 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. CT, weekdays. O-X-Y-M-O-R-O-N!!! have a great rest of the weekend. art

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
