Re: and more Cytotec...From: Hugo D. Ribot Jr. (hribot@mindspring.com)Thu Sep 21 12:42:04 2000
Dan: Excuuuuse moi, oh sage and experienced one... Although it says investigational several times, just the fact that it is listed in their policy manual is acknowledgement enough that it has a role. I read it to mean that if you adhere to what they're comfortable with -- vaginal administration of 25 ug q 3 hours, no previous uterine surgery, appropriate medical or obstetric indication(s) for induction, no outpatient use, yada yada -- that it is OK to use. The word investigational appears in association with specific circumstances: - Oral administration - Cervical ripening/softening prior to hysteroscopy Finally, the word investigational *only* appears 3 times, not 6 times. So even though I ordinarily don't exactly consider myself on the side of the insurers/medical reviewers, I have to give the Tennessee Blues some credit for common sense and at least trying to incorporate what the literature supports. I would almost certainly guess the Blue Cross policy statement came out before Seale's idiotic letter. I wonder if it would cause the Blues to amend or reconsider their position. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
