The death of Cytotec/misoprostol as we know it

I kind of passed over the discussion on the letter released from Searle regarding cytotec and inductions as I hadn't seen it yet.

Well, today I read it.

I am, to be frank, absolutely stunned. I can understand a manufacturer stating that a drug has not been studied in that area (not true) or that it is off-label and not supported by the company, but that letter literally cut off my legs below the knees. After reading it, I don't think I'll be using the drug for induction any more. Not because I think it's not safe - I think the literature in non-VBACs is strongly reassuring and my personal experience has been outstanding with it.

But the reality is if you would ever end up on the witness stand having a copy of that letter (blown up to about 10 feet size, of course) shown to a jury - you are absolutely dead in the water.

Maybe everyone else already blew off steam on the last discussion over this, or maybe nobody is using misoprostol as much as I have been, but this is a real problem for my practice.

Score another point for the plaintiffs bar.

What other products does Searle make - so I can be sure not to prescribe any of them.....?

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education.
