>If a patient comes back for their postpartum exam, and a pap smear is done, Jay, Roberts speaks the truth. ACOG publishes a guideline for perinatal care (or similarly-named manual), which, if I recall correctly, suggests that the postpartum visit consist of a GU exam, breast evaluation, discussion of delivery complications, birth control, and plans for subsequent pregnancies. I am almost certain it does not mention a Pap, but I do not have my copy with me. Since our patients essentially get a "well woman exam" during their initial OB appointment, which includes a Pap and health screening, it seems redundant to do another Pap and well woman exam at the postpartum visit. I'll bet that most folks do not do justice to either the PP visit or the WWE when they try to combine them into one visit. Thus, we do a focused PP visit 6 weeks after delivery, and schedule the patient for a Pap/WWE when their next Pap is due. Our patients have not complained about this, it makes the flow of patients more efficient, and we actually (gasp) get paid for our expertise and time for the WWE.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
