Re: Update: Incarcerated uterusFrom: Steve & Eryl Raymond (eryl@intekom.co.za)Thu Jul 20 13:51:14 2000
There is no practical difference between a Smith-Hodge and a "donut" (Ring) pessary. They both do exactly the same thing despite Drs Smith and Hodge's protestations to the contrary On 19 Jul 2000, at 20:26, Jane Helwig, MD wrote: While I was on vacation last week, the patient came back in for the third time with urinary retention and this time, severe pelvic pain. By then she was 13 weeks. The uterus was still markedly retroverted. My partner put in a donut pessary and the patient sat up, pain gone. Several days later he reexamined her and the fundus had moved up, out of the pelvis. Cervix still anterior, but not under the symphysis as before. I had read about using a Smith-Hodge pessary but not a donut. Interesting. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
