Re: Another Interesting VBACFrom: Dean Huffman (jth@springnet1.com)Sun Jul 16 09:36:48 2000
The issue of labeling of terbutaline apparently has been quite an issue for quite some time. A few years ago (I will try to find it) there was an interesting article by Hugh Barber on the issue. It seems that the drug companies have been fighting tooth and nail to put that wording in and have it stay there. I do not know how big a market IV terbutaline is for tocylysis, but it was certainly a big enough market for a company to make Yutopar. In any event, with the labeling as such, the drug companies can sell terbutaline for tocolysis as much as they want, and take the profits, but if anything ever goes wrong, they can point to the package insert and tell the judge or jury that, "...it was that damn doctor that gave the terbutaline and he did not even look at the package insert. IT IS THE DOCTOR'S FAULT AND WE ARE COMPLETELY INNOCENT."

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
