Campbell Antitrust Bill passes House by two-to-one margin

Early this morning the U.S. House of Representatives passed an amended form of HR 1304, the "Quality Health-Care Coalition Act of 1999," by a vote of 276 to 136. Rep. Tom Campbell, R-Calif., and 220 of his colleagues sponsored the bill.

The landmark antitrust-relief legislation removes legal barriers and allows physicians and other health care providers to engage in joint negotiations with health plans. "This legislation is a great victory for self-employed physicians and organized medicine. It will level the playing field between private doctors and insurance companies," said Jim Zieba, J.D., ISMA's director of government relations.

Zieba suggests ISMA members contact their representatives who voted in favor of HR1304 to express thanks for their support. Those representatives are: Julia Carson, D-10th District Baron Hill, D-9th District Tim Roemer, D-3rd District Mark Souder, R-4th District

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
