Carlos: I think it is because the resting tone or tonus is dramatically increased. It is difficult to measure the resting tone initially as there is no baseline. In the 60's I did some work with strips of myometrium with Spartane. It dramatically increased the tone to the point that contractions could not be detected although they occurred.I think this is why it is dangerous to add another agent such as oxytocin after Cytotec because the tone of the uterus is probably greatly increased. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
