Re: GEN: Networking and DSLFrom: L. Mandel (lmandel@u.washington.edu)Sun Apr 30 13:43:17 2000
When Dean Huffman first brought the dangers of an "always on" connection to our attention in January, I went to Shields Up (http://www.grc.com) and was shocked at how easy it was to connect to my computer even though access did require a password. As a result, I am using Norton Internet Security 2000 ($40.-$50. depending on where you get it; includes Norton AntiVirus 2000) on two of the three computers we have hooked into a cable modem (the third doesn't share files and is not left on). Now we share files and printers behind a firewall. The program also logs any attempt to connect to my computer. In fact yesterday, there were two attempts --"Default Block Backdoor/SubSeven Trojan" blocked. Unfortunately, I can't find an explanation of this cryptic message. Does anybody out there know what this means? In any case, I echo all the warnings to protect yourself with a firewall. If you don't need to share files and/or printers, don't. And try Shields Up. You'll be amazed. Lynn Mandel, Ph.D. Educator, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology University of Washington School of Medicine

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
