Since we can't get rid of the HPV, and we treat based on pathology, why do the typing? In the past, I have used a 5% 5F-U cream 2gm once per week for 10 weeks when there was a lot of generalized HPV thoughout the cervix, vagina and fornices. This has worked quite well. I haven't done this for quite some time. But short of "doing something" about the HPV, the only reason I can think of for seeing if HPV or what type is there, is to use in counseling the woman to NEVER forget to get her pap! That even in a budgetary crisis, this is one place to not scimp!

I guess I'd recheck in 6 months with another Pap. Colpo if (when) she gets to SIL. This would also depend on her mental state over "knowing" she had the "bad" strain of HPV.

Again, what is her mental status of the issue after you tell her the HPV typing? What if she asks you for a hyst? How much of the vagina are you going to take to try to "get" all of the HPV? Have you really done anything to improve her chance of cure - other than to have a counseling point to make sure she never falls out of the recall pattern?
