Re: counseling after amnio results are inFrom: Bert Gold (bgold@ktb.net)Mon Mar 20 08:58:15 2000
Dear Dr. Fougner, With great respect, Dr. Benacerraf and her colleagues are not reporting quite the success levels which you are citing (she picks up about 75% of Downs, by coupling US with AMA amnios). Also, it is generally acknowledged among geneticists that her US techniques are especially well refined, and that an average sonographer is unlikely to have her level of accuracy. See, Genetic sonogram scoring index: accuracy and clinical utility. Bromley B, Shipp T, Benacerraf BR J Ultrasound Med 1999 Aug;18(8):523-8; quiz 529-30 I agree with Dr. Ramirez that complex decisions concerning prenatal diagnosis (e.g. US) and intervention (amnios., termination) are best left to families after some serious counseling so that they can deeply understand the consequences of their decisions. I guess I still think genetic counselors are worth their keep.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
